Vocal Science(TM): Attention Stroke Survivors!

Has Your Voice Been Compromised Due To The Above?

You had a stroke… and luckily, you survived!
In a lot of cases, after the stroke occurs, either the right side or the left side of the body ends up to be paralyzed.  Also, in a lot of cases, the speech centre is also greatly effected, and thus the survived-patient’s speech is very much so compromised. In some cases, it is still recoverable, but in others, unfortunately, the speech remains to be permanently impaired.
For those cases where I could use an alternative approach to voice mechanics, the recovery is still going to be a slow and tedious process, which will require a lot of patience from the person in question and myself.
Usually, a stroke survivor has a very slow and quite slurred speech, not to mention usually pretty faint. Obviously, there is not much enunciation, pronunciation or articulation is precent in those cases.
So in order to enhance the above, a lot of special speech exercises have to be administered. They consist of a lot of visualization, following the special diagrams, the understanding of which is enhanced by implementation of a laser light. It also requires a lot of repetition; the nature of which is very much so consistent with what’s called and known as Pavlovian conditioning.
By employing all of those repetitive exercises, the facial muscles’ cavities become sufficiently strengthened in preparation for harbouring the sound of the human voice within them. Then the muscles of the already weakened body (due to stroke) have to also be strengthened.
The lower abdomen muscles have to be strong enough to accommodate the lift of the voice to its optimal height to reach the facial muscles and get placed within them. For that reason, the body of the sound has to be fully rotated within a 360 degree radius in order to accommodate a proper “voice lift” in a manner of speaking.
The upper diaphragm muscles will begin to work acquiring the principal of “playing the accordion", so to speak.
With that in mind, the upper diaphragm muscles will be responsible for the width and the body of the sound and will be working ‘out and in within the motion’, producing the air along with the mouth breath; which will naturally result in the propulsion of the sound of the voice, delivering it to its aimed destination.
So the wholesome mechanism will begin to work, employing all the components within it… and thus assuring the best possible voice quality and its volume, projected outward to its aimed destination via use of the designed schematics.
All of that will assure no pain or strain on the vocal anatomy, safety of the voice for life, and mainly a much more normal and fulfilled life of a stroke survivor.

Vocal Science - Attention Throat Cancer Survivors!

Had Your Voice Been Compromised Due To The Above?

Unfortunately, after being diagnosed with such a nasty disease like throat cancer and then, as a consequence, having to undergo chemotherapy and radiation treatments, the voice could be very easily compromised and the vocal anatomy could also end up damaged.

The medical doctors, in this case, are usually trying to convince their patients to be grateful that they survived (never mind their damaged voice or anything else which ended up being damaged for that matter).

It’s easy for them to say, but the person who use to speak (or even sing) with a normal voice, feels quite inadequate, as he/she has a communication breakdown via a raspy/hoarse voice, or sometimes, even no voice at all.

Nevertheless, that person is affected with everyday life challenges, not to mention work challenges and… even the loss of the latter due to the inability or limitation of the voice use. Confidence and self-esteem are also greatly compromised and the person, most of the times, feels as “good” as an invalid sitting in a wheelchair.

Could that person be helped?

Perhaps… but definitely not by the doctors, as they (in a manner of speaking) had already “signed the patient’s sentence”. So now the throat cancer survivor has to look for alternative means…

Let’s say that the driver of the car can not start that car the regular way (with the ignition key at the front). So we have to find a way how to start that very car from the back of the car (the trunk perhaps…?) Once its done whichever way, nobody would know the difference; and that is the name of the game…

So in a case of a person in question (throat cancer survivor), it is clear that his vocal anatomy is damaged with all the chemotherapy and radiation treatments he/she had undergone.

So… how can we fix it then, you, my reader, may ask?

The answer is that we, most likely, cannot fix the vocal anatomy per say, but what we could do is to re-channel one’s voice to the different set of muscles which, luckily, had not been compromised by the whole ordeal.

In fact, the voice placed in those, what we call “vocal chambers”, will (in the final analysis) sound better -  more clear, more pronounced and announced, as well as more amplified then even the old voice!

How easy is this to achieve, you may wonder?

The answer is: NOT EASY AT ALL!

First of all, the person really needs to want it.

Second of all, the person has to be prepared to work hard and smart at the same time.

Third of all, the person needs to understand and accept the learning curve (nevertheless, the ups and downs… could be nearly all the way through)

And lastly, the person has to be very much so prepared for the “emotional roller-coaster” which, for some people, it is not easy at all.

In order to re-channel the damaged voice, I need to really “engage” to the person’s “very being”, so to speak.

I call this act a connection between me and my patient “with the umbilical cord”.

And nevertheless, we will have to stay “connected” throughout almost the whole process, until I feel that my “baby” is able to “breathe, walk and talk on his/her own”.

in 1999, our major news paper, Toronto Star, had declared, “It is not as easy as it sounds” and also mentioned that the whole process is “not for the faint of heart”…

Indeed so!

So if you are serious about regaining your voice, and thus reclaiming your life, please consider it if you feel that you have what it takes.

However… GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL!

Voice Repair - If Your Voice is "Broken", Obtain the "Tools" to Fix It.

Hardly finish your tour?
Does your throat hurt after performances?
Voice sounding hoarse?

If your answer is yes, the above are the symptoms of an overused and abused vocal anatomy.

The worst part is if you continue doing it without changing your manner of speaking and singing, it will lead to the need for a serious voice repair and not necessarily a non-surgical one.

By that time, if you attempt to attain the non-surgical voice repair, it might be too late. Then you are facing a laser or a scalpel operation, which could result in scar tissue, which by itself could be more detrimental than the original damage...

This could be your worst nightmare.

The reason I am writing this blog is to prevent you from that possibility.

The prevention is definitely far better than dealing with serious vocal damage.

What does prevention entail, you may ask?

Learning the proper skills for speaking and singing before you embark on any performance or that nasty tour which might leave you voiceless.

I often get phone calls and emails from people who seem to have it all - the songs, the band, the management and even the record deal; and, by now, they no longer have a voice to sing with on their own record.

They are crying and pleading for help and flying to me from all over the world, thus, by that time paying double the money for the trip, hotel and, yes, of course, paying for the non-surgical voice repair course and treatment themselves. That is, provided, of course, that their voice is still saveable and curable without surgery. The latter, I determine by speaking to them over the phone before our mutual commitment to embark on such an endeavour.

"It is not as easy as it sounds," said the Toronto Star in their article about the Vocal ScienceTM method. And it is true; but, at the same time, in most cases, it is quite achievable and obviously doable.

Through speech development and then special voice/vocal exercises, the singer and/or speaker learns how to release the pressure off of his or her voice and off of the vocal box. Concurrently the person's voice will get restructured into the set of their facial muscles.  Those facial muscles, in that occurrence, will play the role of a natural amplifier or (as we call it) resonator.

But that’s not all – those facial muscles must begin to work in full conjunction and coordination with the abdominal muscles, thus, minimizing and practically eliminating the use of the throat, larynx and vocal chords.

Meanwhile, simultaneously, the vocal box has to be nurtured in order to be able to heal.

Over the years I have been using very powerful natural herbs, as well as naturopathic remedies.

Once the mission is accomplished, the difficulties with the voice will never occur again and that is guaranteed, provided that the speaker and/or singer will retain the intellectual understanding and kinesthetic feeling of what was instilled during our unique and smart (and rather not hard) voice/vocal sessions.

Thank you for your time and reading the above information!

We hope that the above information may be helpful for your present and future voice/vocal development.

The Synopsis of The Vocal Science (TM) Method!

Intimate and interactive:

"Alex Norman of illScarlett (Sony BMG Music Canada)"

For those who wanted to know how it all came about, we decided to disclose the "intimate" details of how The Royans Professional Vocal School (a.k.a. The Royans School for the Musial Performing Arts) got conceived, was carried and had been brought up on this Earth for its existence to nowadays.
---

I came to Toronto, Canada from Russia (Leningrad/St. Petersburg) in 1980. In 1984, my partner (common law husband) and I were able to open a school named (at the time) The Royans School for the Musical Performing Arts.

This school was donated to me by an older Polish Canadian philanthropist. This gentleman overheard me singing and playing piano, and while congratulating me on my talent, he asked me why I am teaching singing and piano in other schools, but not in my own? I did reply that I was still a new immigrant and, at the time, my daughter was barely two years old.

To do something like that, it obviously required money which, of course, living the live of a single mother, I did not have much of.

He said to me: “No worries. I could help you. I have the money and I was always dreaming about opening a music school of my own; but everybody was laughing at me saying that being a musician is not really a profession which could earn the living”.

However, he said: “I see in you a person who could carry my dream for years to come; and therefore, I will support it in any way I can”. Surely enough, he gave us a sum of money and also some musical instruments to open up a school attached to a music store.

The original Royans School for the Musical Performing Arts was officially born on February 15th 1984.
Throughout the last 33 years of its existence, the business took quite a few turns and twists. To date, it is primarily a school for people (speakers and singers) who experience difficulties with their voice.

My copyrighted and trademarked Vocal Science™ Method and Technique advocates and promotes safety of the human voice (speaking and singing). In case of it being “broken”, the non-surgical method designed to treat and even cure the cause of the matter; and not only with its revolutionary technique, but also with the application of natural herbal and some homeopathic remedies.
It is a holistic approach to voice mechanics, and we are treating and accessing not only the voice, but the person as a whole.
We are also able to treat related and unrelated disorders such as:

  • Difficulty breathing and swallowing
  • Asthma
  • Allergies
  • Acid reflux
  • “Lump” in the throat (in majority of cases, associated with such vocal disorder as Muscle Tension Dysphonia).
  • Spasmodic Dysphonia (neurological disorder which could be related to pre-stroke conditions)
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Diabetes
  • Colon and stomach disorders (which could be directly connected to any of the voice disorders).
  • Rake’s Edema (smoker’s disease – elimination of bad unhealthy habits)
  • Strained vocal cords
  • Vocal fatigue (often associated with the wrong application of the speaking/singing voice; and chronic fatigue syndrome in general).
  • Sulcus vocalis (Vocal gap)
  • Bleeding vocal cords
  • Laryngitis
  • Damaged vocal cords
  • Vocal cord(s) nodules, polyps, cysts, lesions
  • Lisp, slight stuttering and correction of speech/pronunciation/enunciation and other language defects (Alternative speech pathology)
In fact..

  • We are also helping quite and shy children (and adults) regain their confidence by making their voice heard.
  • We help people with speech limitations, neurological blockages, physiological impasses.
  • We build confidence and self-esteem with a non-surgical "voice-lift."
  • We correct unsuccessful vocal surgery errors and post surgery physical and emotional consequences.
  • We help with building self-assertion; we also work on facial muscle stimulation, digestion, weight loss and core strengthening.

Speak, sing and smile to become a happier and healthier you!
The latter is a proven fact of life :)

The Vocal Science™ technique is a shortcut to the adaptation of professional speaking or singing.

Vocal Science: People With Voice/Vocal Injuries. Are They Afraid To Face Their Horrible Past?

Lately, we have received (in our studio/clinic) a fair amount of people with various voice/vocal injuries caused by numerous forms of accidents. Some of them even had been in a coma for a number of months and their relatives were advised that they may never come out of it; and thus will continue their existence in a vegetative state…

Thank God, some of them proved the doctors wrong and did come out not only from their coma, but even stood up and walked (almost on their own) from out of their wheelchairs… and, nevertheless, on their own two feet!

How remarkable is that?
It is indeed! No doubt, those people went through a lot!
On this note, it is easy to assume that they are real “troopers” and definitely, needless to say, survivors. Unfortunately, for many of them, outside of other physical challenges, their voice became an issue. Some of them literally lost the ability to talk at all or to talk normally. The conventional doctors, speech therapists and pathologists did everything they could possibly do.

So, in a conventional sense, after certain time with therapists (speech included), they suggested to their “doomed” patience to learn how to live with their injuries and disabilities for the rest of their lives…

How sad is that?
Sad indeed!

My recent client, who happened to be a beautiful girl (25 years old) and, in spite of a brain injury, happened to be very smart and witty, but could hardly speak, as a horrific car accident (which took place six years ago), left her with a damaged vocal anatomy.

So given the above, the conventional medicine could not offer her more then what she came with to us -  (hardly speaking with no clarity or enunciation, slurred words and flat, low and monotone sound).

So what would her choices be now? From the conventional point of view, there are no other choices left.

From the point of view of the Vocal Science Alternative Method and Technique, this young person can be helped to improve her voice to a much greater degree - where she would become much more understood, and thus would gain a lot more confidence about herself and would (at least to a degree) reclaim her normal life back!

So the question now is: Does she really want to regain her voice and regain her life she had before the accident?

You, my reader, would exclaim: “Of course…. Why wouldn’t she…?”
Believe me, I could not agree with you more, my diligent reader!

However, as strange as it sounds, it is not always the case…
The fact is that in order to bring back a reasonable amount of the voice quality, a lot of work will be required - from both the sufferer and the alternative voice specialist.

The “new voice” has to be constructed and literally engineered and must be placed in a completely different set of muscles (which had not been injured and are still intact).

I can assure you that it is easier said then done.
But is it possible, you may ask?

But the sufferer has to really want it and mainly must not be afraid to experience something new and not familiar to them at all.

One more very important variable:

http://www.repairyourvoice.com/services/The sufferer has to be willing to “part with their injury”; and in order to do so, in a manner of speaking, the injured party has to be willing to re-live their painful past - mentally, physically, and mainly emotionally…

I will not be able to “build a new house on top of the old one”. In order to build something new, I would have to “break”   the old pattern and get it out of the way, so to speak. I would not want to put the fresh laundry on top of the old smelly one, because eventually, the smell from the old laundry will come through…

Sounds scary…doesn't it?
Scary for sure.

Also because during the process and in the middle of it, the person will feel “homeless”, i.e., in “between of the houses", where the old one (the familiar and dear one)  is already broken, but the new one is still in the process of being built.

So the choice is to continue living in the “old house” with the fear that the roof (at some point in time) might still collapse…, or let go of the old adapted and “comfortable" habits, and instead, gain and embrace something new and fresh; which, in the end, will be that much more rewarding and definitely that much more sound!

Our Vocal Science ™ Method and Technique Is Truly Engineered To Amaze! Experience Today The 22nd Century Of Voice/Vocal Innovation!

If I can say so myself, the Vocal Science method and technique is truly revolutionary!

To date, I have coached and treated over 20,000 clients; and I can say with absolute certainty that none of them came to me with any accountable/tangible technique or quality of speaking and singing taught to them, for that matter. Moreover, some of them revealed to me and my staff that they, before entering such lessons, actually had a quite decent speaking or singing voice.

One of them, apparently, got signed to a major record label and got addressed to a high-end vocal coach. Unfortunately, the aforementioned person never improved her singing skills, but (on the contrary) in the process, got her voice quite damaged. So she came to us not for singing lessons… but for non-surgical voice repair. How sad is that?

Needless to say, since her voice could not handle any recordings and, of course, live performances, she got dropped off of the record label (the very one which had signed her originally). It was very sad to hear, as the girl was very beautiful and very talented; and should she had come to us to begin with, none of the above would have occurred.

The Vocal Science™ method and technique advocates safety and preservation of one’s voice for a lifetime.

How so, you may ask; and what is the difference between the Vocal Science™ technique and the conventional voice/vocal technique?

For example, the conventional vocal technique suggests to a singer (or singer to be) to “drop the jaw down” and “stick the stomach out”, supposedly for the greater air intake…?

The sound is a physical material body, and it travels as such; i.e., in a circular direction (360 degree radius) and relatively, respectably and prospectively to one’s height, weight and the central line of their body. With that said, the sound gets lifted (instead of being dropped with the jaw down) off of the vocal box and off of the vocal cords.
--

For example; if you visualize a baseball player pitching the ball, you will definitely witness him throwing the ball upwards and not downwards, as if he threw the ball downwards, he would have never had any driving force and thus the needed trajectory to achieve his goal.

Another example; the swimmer who has a higher arc in their stroke (and thus also a longer trajectory), no doubt, would come to the shore faster than others.
--

So naturally, to achieve a higher and longer “flight” of the sound, the stomach muscles have to be sucked in and held tight (and definitely not to be stuck out); and the lower jaw has to also be tucked in and definitely never to be dropped down.

Please refer to my book Vocal Science – Flight to theUniverse to the chapter named “How not to become a singer and work hard at doing it”. All of the above-mentioned components are addressed there in great detail. Also, the Vocal Science™ technique of “how to become a singer and work smart - not hard”, is described there in a very educational and, nevertheless, humorous way.

I have been consulting, teaching/coaching and repairing voices for over four decades. And up to this day, I’m still surprised that (I am not afraid to say) nobody (teachers, coaches, music producers, etc.) ever figured out how to enhance (let alone bring it to a professional level or, furthermore, fix) one’s voice. The industry people and (appointed-by-them) their employees are very well aware of how to substitute a good quality singing with forty million dollar stages to be built (like, for example, in Bono’s case of the band, U2) and even how to employ special sound systems, implement state of the art microphones, pedals and other (actually quite amazing) digital gadgets, which are indeed designed to practically “sing” instead of the artist… Mind you, on a second thought, I sometimes prefer the latter to bad singing… LOL.
--

But on a more serious note, I wish I could find a motivated person who would eventually take the “torch” from me and carry it further into the world. To a suitable (on every level) person, I would gladly disclose the trade secrets of the Vocal Science ™ method and technique. My alumni(s) would continue to carry the great mission of saving the world from bad music and bad singing.

Once that happens, I will consider my mission accomplished and I would know in my heart and in my mind that I came to this world to help people to bring their voices to the next level and the absolute heights; for now, to the next century and forever…!
